Is there a difference? It depends on who you ask.
According to Wikipedia there is no difference between curtains and draperies although the term drapery is primarily used in the United States.
As I was coming up in the window treatment business I was always taught that draperies are custom made by an interior designer or their workroom. I was also taught that curtains are the semi-custom or ready-made products you purchase “off the shelf” or out of a catalog. But I’ve also heard that draperies are stationary and can not be closed, while curtains are functional (like shower curtains, or stage curtains at a theater) and can be opened and closed.
Of course if you “Google it” you will probably come back with half a dozen different answers along with a couple dozen links to stores trying to sell you drapes, uh, I mean curtains, uh, I mean, well you get the idea.
